What does a doula do?
A doula provides continuous non-medical support: emotional reassurance, comfort measures like massage and position changes, and information so you can make your own decisions. Postpartum doulas support your recovery, feeding and newborn care at home.
How much does a doula cost?
Our birth doula package is $1,850 ($1,550 in Amarillo). Postpartum care starts at $900 for 20 daytime hours, and overnight care is $2,000 for five 8-hour nights. See our pricing page for every service.
How do retainers and payment plans work?
Birth clients pay a retainer at booking to reserve their doula, and the remaining balance is due by 36 weeks. We also offer payment plans, and we provide superbills.
Can I use my HSA, FSA or insurance?
Many families use HSA or FSA funds or employer benefits like Carrot, Maven and Progyny, and we provide superbills. Most private insurance in Texas doesn't cover doulas yet. We're not in network with TRICARE, and TRICARE does not currently reimburse families for doula services.
Do you offer any discounts?
Yes. We offer discounts for military families, first responders and those working in education.
What if my doula can't make it to my birth?
Every family is guaranteed backup doula coverage. Depending on the circumstances, your backup may be another Nurture & Nest doula or a doula from our network of trusted partners. One family told us their backup doula was so prepared that they felt completely at ease.
Will a doula make my birth feel too medical, or push a natural birth?
Neither. We support families across the full spectrum of birth: spontaneous or induced labor, hospital, birth center or home birth, unmedicated or with an epidural, VBACs and planned or unplanned cesareans. About half of the births we attend are in a hospital and half are at a birth center or at home. Our role is to help you understand your options so the choices are yours, and to walk hand in hand with you through any changes in plans.
Do you support hospital births?
Yes. About half of the births we attend are in a hospital, and the other half are at a birth center or at home.
What's the difference between a postpartum doula and a night nurse?
A night nurse is a licensed nurse who provides medical care. A postpartum doula or newborn care specialist cares for your baby overnight and supports your recovery, feeding and confidence. Many Houston families searching for a night nurse are looking for a postpartum doula. Some of our postpartum doulas and newborn care specialists are also licensed nurses, but when you book through Nurture & Nest, you're booking them in their role as a postpartum doula or newborn care specialist, not as a nurse.
When should I book?
Most families book a birth doula in the second trimester and postpartum care before the baby arrives. Reach out anytime and we'll check availability.
Do you support my partner?
Yes. We show partners comfort techniques, explain what's happening, and help them feel confident supporting you.
Which areas do you serve?
Houston and its suburbs, Galveston and the Bay Area, Austin and Central Texas (including Temple, Killeen, Marble Falls, Johnson City, Boerne, Bastrop and San Marcos), San Antonio and the I-35 corridor, and Amarillo. Our travel doula service covers anywhere else.
Do you have Spanish-speaking doulas?
Yes. Natalia supports families in English and Spanish across Houston and its suburbs.
