How Much Does a Doula Cost in Texas?

Doula prices vary a lot from city to city and from one doula to the next. Here's what families typically pay across Texas, what's usually included, and the ways families make doula care fit their budget.

Typical Birth Doula Prices by Area

Based on our research into published doula prices in each market, here's what families typically see:

  • Houston: about $1,900 to $3,000 for a birth doula package.
  • Austin: about $1,200 to $2,950.
  • San Antonio: about $1,500 to $3,000.
  • Amarillo: prices vary widely, and there are fewer doulas to choose from.

Our birth doula package is $1,850 in Houston, Galveston, Austin and San Antonio, and $1,550 in Amarillo.

What a Birth Doula Package Usually Includes

Most packages include prenatal visits, phone and text support during pregnancy, on-call support in the final weeks, continuous labor support, and at least one postpartum visit. Our package also includes a TENS unit rental, a lending library and guaranteed backup doula coverage. When you compare prices, ask exactly what's included and what happens if your doula can't make it to your birth.

What Postpartum Doulas Cost

Postpartum doulas usually charge by the hour. In Houston, rates often run $45 to $70 an hour; in Austin, $36 to $60; and in San Antonio, $30 to $45 for daytime care. Our daytime care is $900 for 20 hours ($45 an hour), and overnight care is $2,000 for 40 hours ($50 an hour). Postpartum care isn't currently available through Nurture & Nest in Amarillo.

Other Services

  • Childbirth education: $350 for private in-person classes, or $200 for our online/hybrid option.
  • Placenta encapsulation: $350 in Houston, Galveston and Austin.
  • Bengkung belly binding: a $150 add-on in every area we serve.
  • Travel birth doula: from $2,500, plus travel costs.

Ways Families Pay for a Doula

  • Retainer and balance: birth clients pay a retainer at booking to reserve their doula, with the remaining balance due by 36 weeks.
  • Payment plans: spread the cost over your pregnancy.
  • HSA and FSA funds: many families use them for doula care. Check with your plan administrator.
  • Employer benefits: some employers offer Carrot, Maven or Progyny benefits that reimburse doula care.
  • Superbills: we provide them for reimbursement.
  • Discounts: we offer discounts for military families, first responders and those working in education.

Most private insurance plans in Texas don't cover doula care yet. TRICARE does not currently reimburse families for doula services.
